Dog Identification Tags: Basic Guide for Dog Owners

It’s a sunny day and from a short distance, I see my dog playing at her usual spot. I look away for a moment, returned my gaze and she’s gone!Breaking into a cold sweat, I dart across the street hoping to see her familiar form. Nothing! From far away I can hear my hubby’s voice nudging me to wake up. Goodness, gracious - it’s just a bad dream!

For many pet owners, losing a pet is a painful reality. The chances of recovering a lost dog can be slim.  That’s why dog identification tags are important.

Importance of Dog Identification Tags

Dog identification tags are usually attached to a collar to show the owner’s identity. Most are of metal with the owner’s contact details engraved on the surface. These tags are valuable in ensuring the return of a lost pet to their rightful owners.

By law in many countries, dog owners must have the tags affixed to the collars. This is a must, even if their dogs have been micro-chipped.

How to Choose the Right Dog Identification Tags

Depending on your dog’s breed, temperament, health and your own preference, choosing the right one is easy.

Here’s a list of criteria to consider:

  • Material

My dog is quite a scallywag and there’s never a time when she’s not getting into bushes during our walks. A sturdy material that can stand up to this wear and tear is necessary.

Metals such as steel, brass and nickel are hardy options. It all depends on your preference and whether your dog is allergic to some metals. I usually go for the steel ones since it matches the silver of my dog’s collar. Do you want something golden? Then brass can offer that.

Don’t forget to purchase a collar with a sturdy clasp, so the tags don't fall off. I invested in a leather collar for my dog, one that stays put even if she gets frisky. Snap-on collars can be removed with ease, which poses a problem.

  • Size

Do choose a tag that’s proportionate to the size of your dog’s breed. Puppies may grow into big dogs (think St. Bernard!), so consider that, too. These tags are usually inexpensive, so buy a new one when your dog reaches adult size.

  • Design

Tags can come in a variety of shapes and designs. Make sure that these match your dog’s personality and gender. Pick designs that won’t break into small pieces when your dog decides to play rough.

Vital Information to Include

Basic information to include in the tags:

1.    Your mobile or home number

2.    Your address including zip code

3.    Dog’s name

Some pet owners add that their dog is micro-chipped. Veterinary clinics or police stations with the right equipment read data from these chips. I had my dog micro-chipped in case she loses her collar or tag. It’s still an excellent means to protect her.
